The idea of owning a pet - especially a dog - is finally catching on in India. Unfortunately, the number of abandoned pets is also on the increase. Large breeds like German Shepherds and Labrador Retrievers are more commonly abandoned than smaller breeds because they need more space and care, which in turn might translate into them being viewed as nuisances by their owners.

What Abandonment Does to Dogs

The recent economic recession is one of the reasons for this alarming increase in the number of abandoned pets. India, like many other countries, is still picking up the pieces after being hit during the recession. The sudden dip in finances saw many cutting back on costs by moving to smaller apartments. Somewhere along the way, many pets found themselves unwanted and without a home.

Human beings are sometimes capable of appalling cruelty. Abandoning a loving and trusting animal just because its owners could no longer find a place for it in their family is a heinous crime. At the very least, the owner must find the dog another home with people who can and will take care of the animal. However, this rarely happens, as most prefer to take the easy way out and abandon their dog on the streets.
