Thebattle of Marathon took place between the Greeks and the Persians at Marathon, which is a plain on Athenian territory about 40 kilometers northeast of Athens. It was fought by the Athenians and their allies the Plataeans under the command of Militiades against the forces of the Persian king Darius I under the command of Datis and Artaphernes. The Greek victory over the Persians was a crucial turning point in the evolution of Greek military history because this battle on the plains of Marathon ended a major Persian invasion of Europe and allowed the Greeks to evolve into the dominant military power in the ancient Mediterranean world. Additionally, this primeval engagement laid the foundation for Greece as the propagator of Western civilization.

Marathon Battlefield Analysis

For a number of days, the Greeks and the Persians stood in long military formations across the 3,219 meters of wide plain because neither side was willing to attack and loose the advantage of defensive combat. The Greeks were waiting for military support from the Spartan Army, the most elite infantry force of all the Greek city states, while the Persians were waiting for the remainder of their army from Eritrea.
