Chrysler had taken a big step away from the vertical when its 1940 line arrived, with such features as a grille composed of horizontal bars and rounder front fenders that seemed to extend across the car’s width. The narrowly veed hood whose point dropped onto vertical grille bars was gone, as were the elongated headlight doors that had added to the 1939 Chrysler’s up-and-down look.
From the company’s perspective, it was the right move as 1940 sales reached 92,419 cars, according to the Standard Catalog of Chrysler, compared to the previous year’s 72,443. The 1941 Chrysler wore some changed details, but was so generally like the 1940 Chrysler that many motorists probably never saw the difference. It was something that couldn’t be said of the 1942 Chrysler.
When the 1942 Chrysler arrived, few could have foreseen that a slightly modified descendant would be in production into 1949 and just as few could have mistaken it for a 1941 model. Despite its having the previous car’s general shape and proportions, it stood apart thanks to thoughtful application of an Art Deco theme.
