The majority of travellers who carry a camera, put their travel pics on Facebook and treasure the memories are not professional photographers and do not want to take a photography course before setting off on a world trip. Few would even class themselves as ‘amateur photographers’ – they are just travellers who want to capture some memories. Nevertheless, while photography knowledge may be limited, most tourists would want to take the best possible and most intriguing photos. The following tips require little or no camera knowledge or photography skills, but will pay off in better shots.
This article makes the assumption that the impending traveller has left it too late to do anything other than scan the internet for quick tips and ideas. Nevertheless, it bears saying that, if time permits, far more can be achieved by taking one of the many formal photography courses –even an online photography course – that are readily available. Practice with the equipment before leaving and know how to access its features.
A simple trick to add interest to straight landscapes and streetscapes is to frame the shot in some way. This could mean moving to where a leafy tree branch curves from one side over the top of the shot. In streetscapes an ornate lamp pole or antique shop sign might have the same effect. In old European cites, archways make great frames for shots as do landscapes taken through an open window, with the window as a shot frame.
