Stewart history began well enough, with officials who served as stewards in royal and ducal households. Stewards, who exercised considerable influence, were in charge of day-to-day management and financial affairs and were able to exercise both legal and judicial powers.

Before the Stewarts were Royal

For the Stewarts, this exalted office was virtually hereditary. In 11th century Brittany, in northwest France, where the family originated, four generations of Stewarts were stewards to the counts of Dol.

Subsequently, the family emigrated to Britain, where Walter, son of the fourth Dol steward, planted the seeds of the future royal dynasty in Scotland by entering the service of King David I.
